Pakenham – past and present.
Pakenham had it first post office open in February of 1859, and was named after Sir Edward Pakenham, a British general who fought in the Peninsular War of 1807-1814. The railway station was opened in October 1877, thus creating the satellite city linking Melbourne to other towns in the Gippsland region. With the extensive road and train arterials, Pakenham no longer plays the role of a satellite city; it is a booming urban growth area.
Although still considered as a regional suburb in some aspects, the growing population now exceeds 36,000. The public facilities of Pakenham have grown with the demands of the population, the aquatic centre “Cardinia Life” which received a $1.1 Million redevelopment in 2007, originally opened in 1957, and this upgrade was a welcome addition to the centre. The tennis club also had a major redevelopment recently and now has six brand new courts, this is all part of the local councils “Whip into shape” plan. This consists of the remodelling and updating of the local sports and recreational facilities.
The range of public schools are numerous; a total of four public and two catholic schools. For the secondary education you have a choice of one public and three private options and many other schools within easy reach.
Pakenham has often been viewed as a great family environment, with access to many local sporting facilities, excellent shopping, entertainment and medical centres in or near in the surrounding suburbs. Its location also lends itself to access to the great outdoors, with locations such as The Dandenong’s, Mt Baw Baw, Gippsland Lakes and many of Victoria National Parks, within a reasonable drive.
