Queensland First Home Owners Grant – Facts

In September 2012, a $7000 FHOG was superseded by a $15,000 Great Start Grant for first home buyers.

A Queensland Government initiative to help first home owners to get their new first home sooner, the GSG is available for:

  • People buying or building a brand-new house, apartment or townhouse
  • Off-the-plan homes
  • Owner-builder constructions

To be eligible:

  • the property must be a new home
  • it must be under $750,000
  • you must be buying or building your first home. You – or your spouse – cannot have previously owned property in Australia
  • you must be at least 18 years of age, and an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or applying with someone who is a citizen or permanent resident

You must also:

  • live in the home
  • move in within one year
  • live there for at least six months continuously

NB. The Great Start Grant is administered under the First Home Owner Grant Act 2000.
