Berwick is situated in the outer south-eastern suburbs (between Narre Warren and Beaconsfield) around 45km from the Melbourne CBD.

Located in the City of Casey, Berwick's rural landscape has altered dramatically due to the urban sprawl in the south-east growth corridor. First home buyers have descended in droves on Berwick, which has experienced a population explosion since the 1990s.

According to the website (travelvictoria.com.au), Berwick was originally a rich agricultural and pastoral area during the 1800s before developing into a satellite town of Melbourne and then a suburb due to thriving property development.

Berwick was also the home of Australia's first Olympic gold medal winner, Edwin Flack, who won the 800m and 1500m at the inaugural modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. Flack was laid to rest in Berwick Cemetery, and has a memorial in High Street. The Edwin Flack Reserve, adjacent to Berwick Secondary College, is named in his honour.

Berwick is also considered a gateway to the Dandenong Ranges, Puffing Billy Railway, Phillip Island, Mornington Peninsula and Gippsland.

RECREATION / LEISURE

Wilson Botanic Park was originally established as a basalt quarry in 1859 and it operated until 1979. Since then, ongoing redevelopment has seen it evolve into a 39-hectare oasis of gardens, flora and birdlife with several lakes, picnic areas and scenic walking trails with lookouts.

Berwick is host to a number of regular markets. The Akoonah Park Market is held every Sunday at Akoonah Park, off High Street, and offers craft, fresh produce, clothes and bric-a-brac. The Casey Farmers Market is held at the Old Cheese Factory on Homestead Road on the fourth Saturday of each month, with around 30 stalls of fresh food and produce on offer, direct from the grower.

The grand boulevard of High Street extends eastwards towards Beaconsfield where it is lined with poplar trees and identified as an Avenue of Honour to commemorate those who fought in the First World War.

Other local and nearby attractions include Puffing Billy Railway (Belgrave), Lysterfield Lake Park (Narre Warren North), Moonlit Sanctuary (Pearcedale), Challenge Laser Skirmish (Cockatoo), Casey Fields (Cranbourne), Dandenong to Patterson Lakes Cycling Trail, Gumbuya Park (Tynong), and The Old Cheese Factory and Springfield Homestead.

There is also ample provision for fishing, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing and cycling in the City of Casey.

SPORTS CLUBS

Berwick Football Club competes in the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League, while the Berwick Cricket Club is affiliated with the DDCA.

Golfers have the choice of Berwick-Montuna Golf Club, Cardinia Beaconhills Golf Links (Upper Beaconsfield), Churchill Park Golf Club (Endeavour Hills) and Garfield Golf Club.

Tennis enthusiasts have Berwick Tennis Club and also Pakenham Regional Tennis Centre within close proximity.

Other sporting pursuits include Berwick Futsal (Indoor Soccer) and Splashs Swimming School.

St John of God Berwick Hospital is a 70-bed modern private hospital owned and operated by St John of God Health Care. Its full range of services include day surgery, medical, surgical and obstetrics. The hospital has been part of the local community since 1939 and services around 8000 patients a year.

Casey Hospital in Berwick '93 a 229-bed hospital also provides a comprehensive range of health services including an emergency department, general medical, mental health, rehabilitation, surgical and ambulatory care services.
