Cranbourne is a fast-growing suburb located in Melbourne's outer south-east between Dandenong and Tooradin. It is 17km from Frankston, and approximately 50km from the Melbourne CBD.

Situated in the City of Casey, Cranbourne is characterised by a number of suburban housing developments a stark contrast to the original town settled in 1836, which had strong agricultural roots prior to becoming one of Melbourne's major market gardening areas.

Cranbourne also has proud history in horse racing, having held its first meeting in 1867. The Cranbourne Turf Club is now revered as one of the finest racing and training complexes in the state.

The 363-hectare Royal Botanic Gardens is one of the major tourist attractions in Cranbourne, with its 15-hectare Australian Garden showcasing diverse flora (over 100,000 plants and trees), landscapes, art and architecture.

The '%98untouched' Royal Botanic Gardens is home to native heathlands, wetlands and woodlands with thriving bird and animal life.

An unusual attraction within Cranbourne is a meteorite display with full-scale replicas of meteorites that landed in the area in 1860.

Cranbourne is perfectly positioned, just a short drive away from the attractions of the Mornington Peninsula and Western Port, as well as being on the main route to Phillip Island.

The City of Casey is Victoria's most populous municipality and also includes suburbs such as Beaconsfield, Botanic Ridge, Berwick, Blind Bight, Cannons Creek, Clyde, Clyde North, Cranbourne (East, North, South & West), Devon Meadows, Doveton, Endeavour Hills, Eumemmerring, Fountain Gate, Five Ways, Hallam, Hampton Park, Harkaway, Junction Village, Lynbrook, Lyndhurst, Lysterfield South, Narre Warren, Narre Warren (North & South), Pearcedale, Tooradin and Warneet.

Interestingly, Australia's first Olympic champion, Edwin Flack, owned and operated a dairy farm in Berwick and his final resting place is in the Berwick Cemetery. In the 1896 Athens Olympic Games the first of the modern era Flack won the 800m and 1500m events.

RECREATION / LEISURE

The Royal Botanic Gardens recently announced that the second and final stage of the Australian Garden is now open. It comprises 11 new precincts, along with 170,000 plants representing more than 1700 different plant varieties.

Casey Fields a 76-hectare site in Cranbourne East is the premier outdoor sports facility in Melbourne's south-east. It features a broad range of active and passive recreation opportunities for the entire region, including a regional athletics centre, sports ovals (cricket, football, rugby), tennis courts, playgrounds, netball courts and criterium cycling track.

It is also a VFL training base for the Melbourne Football Club's affiliate, the Casey Scorpions.

There has also been much consultation on the construction of the Cranbourne bypass, with the proposed route starting off South Gippsland Highway, then running along Narre Warren - Cranbourne Road before eventually re-entering South Gippsland Highway adjacent to the Great Southern Home Centre.

HEALTH & COMMUNITY SERVICES

Cranbourne Integrated Care Centre comes under the auspices of MonashHealth '%93 Victoria's largest health service.

Its community health services are tailored to meet the needs of one of the most rapidly growing populations in Australia. Its services include: allied health services; multi-disciplinary early intervention for children; comprehensive counselling and family support services; youth health programs; women's health services; service for aged and disabled clients.

Also falling under the MonashHealth umbrella is Cardinia Casey Community Health Service, and Casey Hospital in Berwick '%93 a 229-bed hospital providing a comprehensive range of health services including an emergency department, general medical, mental health, rehabilitation, surgical and ambulatory care services.

The maternity unit and special care nursery are kept extremely busy meeting the needs of the many new families in the district.

Casey Hospital is also a provider of paediatric services for Monash Children's and is a centre for the leading cardiac services of Monash HEART.
