Rich in heritage, Mernda (situated only 30km of Melbourne's CBD) has a magical mystique and a magnetic appeal for new home buyers in Melbourne's north-east.

Mernda is situated in the City of Whittlesea - one of Melbourne's five major metropolitan growth areas.

According to the council website (www.whittlesea.vic.gov.au), Mernda was named in 1913 - the township consisted of a school, a Methodist church, a store and a railway station. In the early 1900s there were many dairy farms in Mernda that supplied milk to Melbourne.

The (Mernda/Doreen) area has grown from a population of 1316 in 2001 to 3430 in 2006, and is anticipated to grow to around 40,000 people at full development. The name Mernda means 'Cyoung girl' in the local Wurundjeri Aboriginal language.

A number of important services are in close proximity to Mernda - Melbourne Airport (approx 30mins), Northern hospital (approx 15mins) and South Morang train station (approx 13mins).

The Kinglake Ranges are easily accessible from Mernda and offer absolutely breathtaking views of Melbourne, and also great walking tracks and picnic areas where you can discover an abundance of flora and fauna.

RECREATION / LEISURE

Mernda oozes lifestyle and sheer relaxation, which is accentuated by its beautiful parks and native red gum reserves:

Simon Creek Wetland - the wetland has an area of 11 hectares. Its facilities include a wetland conservation reserve, walking trails, lake, car parking, amphitheatre and boardwalks.

Riverdale Park - this park has an area of almost 1 hectare, with playground, basketball half-court, shelter, bocce, barbecue and picnic facilities etc.

Mernda Recreation Reserve - the reserve has an area of 8.7 hectares, with football and cricket ovals, netball court, pavilion and change rooms, playground, public toilet and car parking.

Rippon Lea Park - this park has an area of just over three-quarters of a hectare. Its facilities include playground, basketball half-court, shelter, barbecue and picnic amenities.

Mernda is also steeped in tradition with historically significant sites such as Carome Homestead, which was built in the 1800s and has been restored to its former glory.

The homestead was initially one of the state's earliest water-powered flour mills, known as the Carome Mill.

The building now also features the Two Beans and a Farm Caf%C3%A9, which uses home-grown produce.

Mernda Bakery is believed to have been designed and constructed by Charles and Stephenson Turner in 1892. The bakery is a complete 19th century country bakery with bakehouse oven, stabling, shop and house. Customers drool over the variety of breads cooked in the original wood-fired oven and the specialty cakes.

Mernda is also a popular cycling route within the City of Whittlesea.

NB. Mernda Villages has more than 70 hectares of open space including wetlands, parks and quarry hills, and more than 10 kilometres of shared pedestrian and cycle tracks.

SPORTS CLUBS

Mernda Football Club ('Demons') has a 100-year plus history in the Whittlesea District Football League and Northern Football League.

The club was originally formed as the South Yan Yean Football Club and carried the colours maroon and amber. Its first game was played on May 9, 1891 against Whittlesea, and South Yan Yean went on to win the premiership in that year.

The netball club - Section 3 premiers in 2012 - is also aligned with the football club.

SHOPPING

Developed by Stockland (www.stockland.com.au), Mernda Village Shopping Centre has a Woolworths supermarket, and around 10 specialty stores including pharmacy, bakeries and cafes.

NB. Mernda Villages is only 10 minutes from Plenty Valley Shopping Centre and Epping Plaza.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT & ROADS

An extended rail line to Mernda and Epping North is a priority for the City of Whittlesea in its discussions with the State Government.

The council says eventually 45,000 people will live in the Mernda/Doreen growth area, so the need for a train service is critical.

Mernda has been planned with fixed rail transport at its heart and high-density development around the station's planned location.

The Department of Transport estimates the Mernda heavy rail extension will cost $650m.

HEALTH & COMMUNITY SERVICES

Mernda Villages has both a medical and dental centre.

Child care and maternal health services are available at the village's state-of-the-art Community Activity Centre.
