Based on the fringe of west Gippsland, Pakenham is situated 56km south-east of the Melbourne CBD.

Pakenham is considered an urban growth area within the Cardinia Shire Council, along with Beaconsfield and Officer.

Cardinia Shire, only a 45-minute drive along the Monash Freeway from Melbourne, features iconic tourist attractions such as Puffing Billy and Emerald Lake Park.

In fact, you can ride on Puffing Billy from Belgrave to Emerald station and walk to Emerald Lake Park, which offers fun on paddleboats, the largest model railway display in the Southern Hemisphere, and a free outdoor wading pool.

Extending from the Dandenong Ranges in the north to Western Port Bay in the south, the shire is one of the fastest growing regions of metropolitan Melbourne. It comprises rapidly growing residential areas, including Pakenham, and rural farmland accessed by the Monash Freeway and Princes Highway.

Given its indigenous heritage, Cardinia Shire has unique Aboriginal cultural landscapes used by the Bunurong people until early explorers and settlers opened up the land for farming and agricultural development.

Post-war soldier settlement farming, orchards and residential expansion saw the growth of existing townships, such as Pakenham, which continue to accelerate as the population grows and demand for housing and land, and jobs, increase.

Pakenham is, in some aspects, still considered a regional suburb but new housing estates such as Lakeside, Falling Waters and Heritage Springs are boosting its population.

The Cardinia Shire Council also incorporates the following townships - Beaconsfield, Bunyip, Cardinia, Catani, Cockatoo, Cora Lynn, Emerald, Garfield, Gembrook, Koo Wee Rup, Lang Lang, Nar Nar Goon, Officer, Tonimbuk, Tynong and Upper Beaconsfield.

RECREATION / LEISURE

The Cardinia Cultural Centre in Pakenham has regular entertainment attractions, community events, and arts and culture activities.

Cardinia Shire has 15 reserves, including eight in Pakenham, available for hire to celebrate weddings, reunions, birthdays, anniversaries or just to catch up with friends.

Aboriginal heritage sites in the shire include Kar Dinn Yarr artefact display (named after the Bunurong term - close to the sunrise'). This display showcases the Aboriginal artefacts unearthed during the excavation and development of the aquatic and recreation centre, Cardinia Life, in 2004.

Located in the Lakeside Pakenham estate, Winjeel's Trail (named after the Aboriginal term for ('young eagle') was developed to acknowledge the Bunurong as the traditional owners of the land and celebrate their culture.

Other nature reserves in the shire include Bunyip Sanctuary, Toomuc Creek Bushland Reserve (which meanders through the Toomuc Valley and Pakenham district), and the Beaconsfield and RJ Chambers flora and fauna reserves.

Cardinia Shire also has two multi-use trails: Cardinia Aqueduct Recreation Trail (CART), and Emerald-Cockatoo Recreation Trail (ECRT).

Surrounded by bushland, both offer opportunities for riding, walking, cycling and horse riding.

Set among eucalypt forests in the Dandenong Ranges foothills, the CART begins in Pakenham and ends in Officer. It contains 28 nationally and regionally significant plant species. Studies have found 148 native birds, 21 native mammals, 13 reptile and 10 frog species in the reserve, including the rare powerful owl.

Meanwhile, the ECRT is a comfortable two and a half hour walk from Emerald to Cockatoo; wandering through natural settings including Nobelius Heritage Park, Emerald Lake Park and Wright Forest.

Other leisure activities include Kurth Kiln Regional Park (Gembrook) and Cardinia Reservoir Park.

Pakenham's youth is well catered for with a skate playground and two dirt BMX tracks.

SPORTS CLUBS

Pakenham has numerous sporting activities and clubs, including horse racing, football, cricket, golf, tennis, basketball, netball, baseball, and little athletics.

The Pakenham Racing Club schedules around 11 thoroughbred meetings a year including the Pakenham Cup in March.

Pakenham Football Club competes in the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League.

A sporting showpiece is the Pakenham Regional Tennis Centre - the biggest tennis complex in the south-eastern region and the only one with 'plexicushion' court surfacing. It features 18 floodlit tennis courts, a furnished function room, outdoor seating, kiosk, and a pro shop.

Another sporting showcase in Pakenham is Cardinia Life, a sports and aquatic centre which includes a 25m indoor pool, gym, group fitness, a cr%C3%A8che, and eight multipurpose sports courts.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT & ROADS

Pakenham is serviced by the Princes Highway, with the Pakenham bypass allowing road traffic between Melbourne and Gippsland to bypass Pakenham.

Trains:
A suburban train service runs between Pakenham and Melbourne. The service stops at Pakenham, Officer and Beaconsfield. Two V/Line services pass through Cardinia Shire and terminate at Southern Cross station in Melbourne. These two services travel between Traralgon and Melbourne, and Bairnsdale and Melbourne. Both have limited stops within the metropolitan area after Pakenham station.

Bus:
Eleven local bus services operate across Cardinia Shire, including the Koo Wee Rup-Pakenham service operated by Sunshine Tours.

Taxi:

A number of taxi services operate in Cardinia Shire, including Pakenham Taxis (Pakenham Upper, Pakenham, Officer, Koo Wee Rup).

HEALTH & COMMUNITY SERVICES

Casey Hospital (Berwick) is a 229-bed hospital providing a comprehensive range of health services including an emergency department, general medical, maternity, mental health, rehabilitation, surgical and ambulatory care services.

The hospital is a provider of paediatric services for Monash Children's and is a centre for the leading cardiac services of MonashHEART.

Cardinia Casey Community Health Service (also under the MonashHealth umbrella) offers the following services: counselling; dental; health promotion; home and community care; optometry; physiotherapy; women's health; youth; sexual and reproductive health.

Co-located services include linkages, gambling support, chronic and complex programs, family counselling, diabetes group, cardiac graduates, and drink drive program.


Pakenham & District Hospital (Pakenham Aged Care) is a community-based organisation providing residential care to older and disabled people. It has around 92 residents who receive visiting service providers, including hairdressing, podiatry, physiotherapy and massage.
