Baw Baw Shire is a picturesque place with a wonderful rural character, sense of spaciousness and a high quality environment making towns such as Warragul a desirable place to live and work.

It's a region of diversity and beauty, from the alpine majesty of the Baw Baw Plateau and the rich gold mining history of Walhalla to lush valleys and gourmet country pastures. Key industries include manufacturing, horticulture, health, education and retail.

Warragul is situated in West Gippsland, between Drouin and Yarragon, 104km south-east of the Melbourne CBD.

And it is also located in the Baw Baw Shire - one of Victoria's fastest growing municipalities with freeway access into the centre of Melbourne and Tullamarine and Avalon airports.

The Baw Baw Shire covers high quality farmland and woodlands, and has the closest snow fields to Melbourne.

Still considered a rural centre, Warragul lies between the Strzelecki Ranges to the south and the Mount Baw Baw Plateau of the Great Dividing Range to the north. The town is named after an Aboriginal term meaning 'wild dog'.

Warragul is the main population and service centre of the West Gippsland region and the Baw Baw Shire. The surrounding area is noted for dairy farming and other niche agriculture, and has long been producing gourmet foods.

The shire also manages many parks and gardens in main township areas: Warragul Drouin, Trafalgar, Erica, Drouin East, Neerim South, Thorpdale, Yarragon, Rawson, Noojee, Neerim, Neerim Junction, Willow Grove, Darnum, Nilma, Longwarry, Buln Buln, Darnum, Jindivick, Rokeby and Walhalla.

Baw Baw Shire provides a huge range of education options including: pre-schools; primary schools; secondary colleges; special needs schools; TAFEs; agricultural colleges; and access to university campuses.

RECREATION / LEISURE

A number of attractive gardens and parks are located in Warragul, with the most scenic being Civic Park.

Warragul is home to some of Victoria's richest agricultural land, as well as being a major supplier of milk for Melbourne. A number of festivals and events are centred around the town's agricultural and dairying industry, including Farm World and Harvest of Gippsland.

The Gourmet Deli Trail consists of a network of farms, vineyards and outlets selling local produce and smallgoods, and covers much of the area surrounding Warragul.

Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort is nestled high among the Great Dividing Range, and is the closest downhill ski resort to Melbourne. The resort is situated on the edge of the Baw Baw Plateau and offers spectacular views across West Gippsland towards Bass Strait and Westernport Bay.

The Walhalla and Mountain Rivers area incorporates the towns of Erica, Rawson Walhalla Historic Township and localities such as Coopers Creek, Aberfeldy, Moodarra and Tyers Junction. This region is like an island in the sky' and sets itself apart from other parts of Gippsland by providing year-round activities that suit all tastes and budgets.

From emerald pastures and fields of golden hay, to clear rivers, waterfalls, temperate rain forests, green rolling hills, alpine landscapes, public and private gardens and vineyards, West Gippsland Gourmet Country reminds you that truly spectacular scenery still exists. Here you will find the food and wine treasures of West Gippsland, with the freshest variety of local produce including cheeses, fruits, olives, vegetables, fish and free-range meats.

Mount Worth State Park protects a remnant of the forests that once covered the western Strzelecki Ranges. Tall wet forests of Mountain Ash, Mountain Grey Gum and Blackwood grow on the hills and slopes and tree ferns flourish in sheltered gullies.

Lillico Glass Studio (5km north of Warragul) offers and all-round experience, and is the home and working studio of well-known glass artist, Hadyn John.

West Gippsland Arts Centre in Warragul also features popular entertainment and exhibitions during the year.

Warragaul Skate Park is rated by many skaters as the best in Victoria. Its major features include a magnificent triple bowl and a challenging half-vert wall.

Warragul Track is used by professional BMX riders, the Warragul Wyld Dogs BMX Club, and local residents. Dirtz Tracks and Trail, the premier BMX track designers in Australia, donated the track design and former BMX Junior World Champion, Ashley McCutheon, provided professional advice on the shaping of the track.

Other leisure activities in Baw Baw Shire include Warragul Leisure Centre,Warragul Equestrian Centre, Buln Buln Wetland, Bunyip State Park, Drouin Discovery Trails, Baw Baw National Park, plus swimming, bike riding, horse riding and motor biking.

SPORTS CLUBS

Warragul has one of the best outdoor cycling velodromes in the state and is serviced by the Warragul Cycling Club, which conducts road races most Saturdays on the outskirts of the town. The club also hosts the Baw Baw Classic road race, held annually in early April.

Two racing codes (harness & greyhounds) conduct regular meetings at the Logan Park Showgrounds.

Warragul Country Club has an 18-hole golf course with great views of Mt Baw Baw and the Strzelecki Ranges.

Warragul Football Netball Club ('Mighty Gulls') is affiliated with the Gippsland League, while the Warragul Industrials competes in the Ellinbank & District Football League.

Latrobe Community Health is a major provider of primary health and support services across the Latrobe Valley and Gippsland.

Latrobe Regional Hospital in Traralgon is a purpose-built, 261-bed teaching hospital offering a suite of medical services including aged care, cancer care, elective surgery, maternity, rehabilitation and mental health.

Meanwhile, West Gippsland Healthcare Group provides acute medical and surgical, obstetric, emergency, community and aged care services, primarily in the Baw Baw Shire.
